quote:

"Port Edward Country Club
You’ll enjoy more than the golf at Port Edward. This country club is reputed to have the friendliest 19th hole on the Golf Coast. The nine-hole course is short but testing with pretty coastal and inland views. Water comes into play on four holes and the Port Edward Country Club has sloping fairways that can be tricky to play, with a view of the sea from every tee box to make your golfing day memorable. This nine-hole golf course has duplicate tees enabling you to play a round of 18 holes, and the prevailing winds provide challenges to all golfers."

THE RED DESERT

Port Edward claims to have the smallest desert of the world, called the  "Red Desert". The area lies some
kilometres west of town and measures only 11 hectares. It looks like a miniature version of the Arizona desert. Man-high hills and valleys from naked red soil build a striking contrast to the lush,
subtropical vegetation of the surrounding.

From the savanna grassland of the conservancy area, as one clears the trees, the Red Desert dunes appear ahead. Climbing up the steep incline, and reaching the top, one looks over the smallest desert in the world. A little further in, the strangest sounds emanate from the dunes, the wind whistles, and the sound is quite eerie as there are no birds or any other creature making any sound at all. It is almost as though one has passed through a portal into another dimension, peaceful and quiet.

Fossils have been found that date back millions of years, to a time when dinosaurs roamed the South Coast. The Red Desert has the most spectacular viewing areas over the sea and the Umtamvuna River mouth, a rare treat not to be missed.

FREDERIKA NATURE PRESERVE, Southbroom

The reserve is unspoilt dune forest. There are scores of giant milkwoods, particularly at the northern end, which overlooks the 17th tee of the golf course. It is completely untouched, there are no trails.
The Frederika Nature Preserve came into being in 1977 when 30 beachfront residential sites where placed on the market. Leo Driessen, a concerned environmentalist, realised the value of the biodiversity of the area and the negative impact that development of the primary dune would have on Southbroom. He chose to purchase all of the properties on offer and donated them into the custody of SA Nature Conservation Centre (now Delta
Environmental Centre). He named the preserve for his wife, Frederika, who later increased its size by the
donation of certain adjoining sites on the highest part of the dune. In 1990, Delta's then Chairman, and friend of Leo Driessen, Mr NC Bloom,  registered the preserve with the Department of Environment Affairs as a South African Natural Heritage Site of National Importance.
To quote the Natal Parks Board's Chief Professional Officer's report: "The stand of Coastal Forest is in good condition and has a high diversity of species present. The area shares a common boundary with the Government reserve and is therefore somewhat unique in having sea frontage. This community was once more extensive
along the Natal South Coast but today exists only in a few isolated patches due to land being cleared for urban and agricultural development. Species such a blue duiker and bushbuck are present in the forest."
The Southbroom Conservancy is now involved with the management practices required by Natural Heritage status: continued alien plant removal with associated soil damage and erosion reclamation; and regular patrolling to prevent debarking of trees, snares and eliminate trespassing.
Frederika comprises 8 hectares of mature, virgin dune forest and borders the 16th, 17th and 2nd fairways of the Southbroom golf course. It is best viewed from the beach. For the shortest walk to view the Frederik, gain access to the beach at the Woodlands road cutting and continue south to Black Rock Road.
